Millennium Wonders
Millennium Wonders
We wonder why they did it,
We wonder how they got away with it,
And we wonder how much it cost us.
This photographic documentary uses the subjective landscape methods of photography to portray my personal feelings about the Irish and British governments’ commemoration of the Millennium.
Throughout these two countries vast quantities of tax payers money was been squandered; bridges, towers, domes and spikes were been erected in the effort to celebrate the new millennium. But at what cost? The majority of the ‘Millennium Projects’ went way beyond their allocated budget and to date some have not even recuperated their initial investments.
Within this piece of work it was my aim to represent and appreciate the architectural masterpieces in a justifiable aesthetic manner, while at the same time bringing to the public’s attention some of the disastrous consequences that some these projects have had upon society i.e. showing where the governments allocation of funding was clearly not prioritised.
Each image is accompanied with a section of a published article, from a newspaper printed on the day which that particular millennium project was publicly opened or unveiled. The articles have nothing to do with the projects; they are about real life issues where the governments have failed their citizens.
